It's perhaps not quite true to say that nothing was written down: in the memorandum book of Josiah F- covering the relevant period, now in the -shire Local Record Office and mainly consulted by historians of the Industrial Revolution and early C19th civic improvements, there is a somewhat cryptic little triangular diagram, with a date beside it. This has been taken to refer to a new industrial process of some kind
